The deal with my title

I get a lot of queries when I present my business cards to people - the title on the card reads; PathFinder. – "path finder" they would say, "what is that?" I have long been trying to lead without a title - my aim consistently has been to become a corporate leader in South Africa and the world. I never went out to become a CE or an MD or any other fancy title out there. All I wanted to do is build a major business, build my skills and abilities in the process and help nurture other people and of course, make a whole lot of money in the process - very naive view, I know. Why black family businesses fail

Now. . . I was not instructed in the art of business at dinner table – though we had a dinner table, it was rare for us to sit as a family around it. My mother, a teacher, would arrive in the afternoon and after food was made would go and sleep, I knew that the shop closed at 20:30 and would expect her husband by 21:15. After a full day with school and extramural activities, by supper time I was tired and would sit in front of the television to have my supper. I am sure many folks shared this sort of family life, as I am sure many had a very different family life. This was mine, and despite all that - an entrepreneur was born. Entrepreneurialism is a psychological affliction

You really have to be quite crazy to leave the cushy and plush working environment of an established corporate or government department to become an entrepreneur. To go against conventional wisdom and advice to start something with no certainty of a future – let alone income potential to sustain you; where people actively and to your face wonder about your sanity. “How can such a promising person be so stupid” or “How can you be so foolish” or many other similar statements. When I took the leap, I was well on my way to rising within the Department of Science and Technology in Pretoria. They had offered me the position of Assistant Director (No idea, about the title) at the tender age of 26.
